Statement: $2.85M for EV charging in Maine

The U.S. Departments of Transportation and Energy announced Thursday that Maine will receive $2.85M for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Lack of available electric vehicle charging is a major barrier preventing people from making the switch to an electric car. This new funding will create a better network of EV charging across Maine and help address global warming pollution by growing the EV market.

Local governments have an important role to play in making clean transportation a reality. Every day, local governments make decisions about municipal purchasing, the use of public streets and parking garages, planning and zoning, and other issues that can either make it easier or more difficult for their residents to own an EV. By using a set of key tools to encourage EV adoption, local governments can help clean up the air in their communities and take meaningful action against global warming.

Maine governor signs groundbreaking waste reduction bill into law

Gov. Janet Mills signed LD 1541, which holds producers responsible for their packaging waste, into law on Tuesday. The new law will establish a program called Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Packaging, which will require big corporations to shoulder a large percentage of the costs of recycling and waste disposal programs in the state.

Recharge Where You Recharge: Environment Maine launches campaign for EV chargers on public lands

Environment Maine launched a new campaign Thursday calling for state and federal lawmakers to expand electric vehicle infrastructure on Maine’s state parks and public lands. With transportation emissions as the top polluting sector of our economy, the switch to electric vehicles (EVs) is critical for protecting public health and the environment from global warming pollution. Specifically, the Recharge Where You Recharge campaign is calling for the installation of at least two EV chargers in each of Maine’s state parks.

Poll: Mainers represented by Rep. Golden rate climate provisions of infrastructure plan highly

AUGUSTA — A new poll released Thursday revealed support for President Joe Biden’s infrastructure proposal, particularly as it relates to climate change and clean energy, across the political spectrum in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. The district, represented by Rep. Jared Golden, includes all of the northern part of the state, comprising nearly 80 percent of the state’s total land mass. The survey, sponsored by Environment Maine, Earthjustice and Environment America, provides district-specific data on how voters view the American Jobs Plan (AJP).
