Maine House and Senate vote to advance bill to protect bees

Both the Maine House and Senate voted Wednesday to advance a measure that would prohibit the use of certain neonicotinoids (neonics) for outdoor residential use. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Nicole Grohoski (Ellsworth), passed by a bipartisan 92-53 vote in the House and 27-7 in the Senate. While this is a clear signal that the bill has the backing to become law, the measure will face additional votes in the House and Senate before reaching the governor’s desk.

Statement: Biden moves toward allowing states to return to setting stricter vehicle emission standards

WASHINGTON -- The Biden administration announced Monday it would begin to undo the Trump administration’s attempt to block states such as California from setting stronger tailpipe emissions standards than the federal government. Specifically, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) posted a notice seeking public input for the purposes of rescinding the Trump’s administration's action. This is the first step toward reaffirming California’s clean cars waiver under the Clean Air Act and allowing other states to adopt California’s more stringent greenhouse gas emissions standards and zero emissions vehicle mandates.

Biden to commit to major emissions reductions in sweeping climate announcement

WASHINGTON -- According to reports ahead of a global climate summit in Washington, President Joe Biden will announce Thursday that the United States will reduce global warming emissions 50 percent by 2030 as part of America’s commitments under the newly rejoined Paris climate accords. This nearly doubles the target agreed to in 2015 by the Obama administration. The reductions will hinge on an accelerated transition to carbon-free electricity and the phase out of gas-powered vehicles.

Statement: Recovering America’s Wildlife Act a key step in combating extinction crisis

Reps. Jeff Fortenberry, a Republican from Nebraska, and Debbie Dingell, a Democrat from Michigan, introduced the bipartisan Recovering America’s Wildlife Act on Thursday. The bill earmarks $1.397 billion annually for state fish and wildlife agencies, as well as $97.5 million to tribes, to carry out wildlife conservation efforts such as protecting nesting habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker.

Environment Maine supports legislation to reduce homeowner and municipal energy costs through increased efficiency and weatherization projects

On April 21, 2021, Environment Maine's State Director Anya Fetcher testified before the Maine Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs in support of LD 1094, a proposed bill to lower energy costs for Maine's seniors, low-income residents, schools, and towns through weatherization and energy efficiency efforts.
